Code of Conduct

Please observe the following while on library property:

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

Reading, Researching, Studying, Writing, Participating in library programs, Using library materials and services.  Adults may read aloud to children in the children’s area.  Young children are encouraged to come to the library as long as they are under the direct supervision of a parent or other adult.

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

  • Any violation of a Village code or ordinance
  • Engaging in loud, boisterous or unsafe behavior
  • Using profanity or obscene language
  • Operating any electronic device so that it disturbs others
  • Running, fighting, pushing, shoving
  • Climbing on tables, shelves or other furniture
  • Engaging in inappropriate displays of affection or sexual conduct
  • Loitering
  • Possession of weapons of any type except as authorized by state law
  • Neglecting to provide proper supervision of children
  • Verbally or physically threatening or harassing others
  • Interfering with staff’s performance of duties, including physical or verbal harassment
  • Defacing library property
  • Consuming or possessing alcoholic beverages or controlled substances
  • Misuse of restrooms including laundering, bathing, shaving, hair cutting and sexual activity
  • Smoking or using e-cigarettes
  • Using candles, matches or lighters or interfering with the fireplace in any way
  • Campaigning, petitioning, canvassing, leafleting, or soliciting for any purpose

The library is not responsible for library patrons’ personal belongings.  Personal belongings should not be left unattended.

Patrons are required to wear shirt, shoes and appropriate clothing while using the library.

Offensive body order due to poor hygiene, overpowering perfume or cologne that causes a nuisance is prohibited.

Service animals and animals used for library programs are the only animals permitted in the building.

A violation of a Village code or ordinance could result in prosecution. Actions that violate local, state or federal laws will be prosecuted.   

Any patrons who violate the library’s rules and policies may be required to leave the library premises and may forfeit their library privileges for 30 days or more. 

Patrons may appeal to the Franklin Public Library Board with respect to any action taken under this Code of Conduct.
