The story begins in 1987, following a catastrophic storm. Cora Atkin, a former dancer trapped in an abusive marriage with a well-respected local doctor, Gordon, heads to a registrar's office to name their newborn son. While Gordon demands the baby be named after him, Cora hesitates, considering two other options: "Julian" (her personal preference) or "Bear" (suggested by her nine-year-old daughter, Maia).
