Clear" by Carys Davies is a novel set in 1840s Scotland during the Scottish Clearances, where a poor minister named John Ferguson is tasked with evicting the sole inhabitant, Ivar, from a remote island; however, after John is injured on the island, Ivar takes him in and nurses him back to health, leading to a profound connection between the two men despite their different backgrounds and a language barrier, forcing them to confront themes of belonging, displacement, and the complexities of human connection amidst a harsh historical backdrop.
