Sign-Talker follows the Lewis and Clark Expedition through the eyes of George Drouillard, a real-life, half-Shawnee and half-French scout. Hired for his elite hunting skills and mastery of Plains Indian sign language, Drouillard serves as the vital diplomatic and survival bridge between the white explorers and the native tribes. His tracking abilities repeatedly save the crew from starvation and conflict as they map the uncharted West.
Told through Drouillard's unique bicultural lens, the narrative contrasts the white leaders' ambitions with the reality of the indigenous nations who already inhabit the land. While the expedition successfully reaches the Pacific, the story concludes by highlighting the tragic, destructive aftermath of American expansion on Native American cultures and the explorers themselves.
EVERYONE WELCOME.
