The Future (2119): Set in a dystopian Britain—now a chain of islands after the "Inundation of 2042"—the story follows Thomas Metcalfe, a humanities scholar. He is obsessed with a lost poem from 2014, "A Corona for Vivien," written by the celebrated (fictional) poet Francis Blundy. The Past (2014–2020): The second half of the novel shifts perspective to Vivien Blundy, the poet’s wife. Through her memoirs, the reader learns the "raw, specific, and morally devastating" truth behind the poem's creation and the secrets of their circle.
