"The Emperor of Gladness" by Ocean Vuong follows Hai, a 19-year-old college dropout on the verge of suicide, who is saved from jumping off a bridge by Grazina, an 82-year-old woman with dementia. Hai becomes Grazina's caregiver, and their unlikely bond blossoms over the course of a year, impacting Hai's relationship with himself, his family, and the struggling community of East Gladness, Connecticut.
