Fredrik Backman's My Friends is about a troubled teenager named Louisa who discovers the backstory of a famous painting, "The One of the Sea". The painting was created by one of four friends—Joar, Kimkim, Ted, and Ali—who found refuge in each other's company one summer on an abandoned pier. The novel weaves together Louisa's grief for her own deceased best friend, Fish, with the story of the four teens, revealing how their powerful friendship, despite difficult home lives, led to a transcendent work of art that later connects them all.
