This novel is a follow-up to Whitehead’s book Harlem Shuffle. In 1971, Ray Carney, a Black furniture salesman, struggles to keep himself away from the criminal underworld. Due to riots in Harlem, he helps a corrupt police officer, Munson, sell stolen jewelry. In 1973, Carney returns to the criminal world and is approached by Black filmmaker Zippo to shoot his film, Nefertiti T.N.T., but is irritated by the racially diverse crew and the loss of revenue. By 1976, Carney rises to the top of the criminal underworld.

EVERYONE WELCOME.
